Spinal Pain Management

Spinal pain management is a neurological subspecialty concerned with alleviating the pain associated with neck and back conditions. Pain management is an option for patients with continued pain despite medications or therapy. The goal of spinal pain management is to remove pain, rather than to correct the condition causing pain. This is an effective approach because often the pain itself is self limited. Therefore, pain management sometimes allows a minor procedure to be as effective as major surgery in relieving pain. However, if the condition worsens or pain returns, surgery may be indicated.

Spinal pain management usually involves a small needle, placed through the skin, to the site of the neck or back causing pain. The targeted cause of pain can usually be determined by physical exam and an MRI. Usually, anesthetic and anti-inflammatory medications are injected at the site of the pain generator.

Los Angeles Brain and Spine Institute physicians perform the spectrum of pain management procedures. Our pain specialists also work closely with our physical therapists and surgeons, to ensure that the most effective and conservative option is available for our patients.
