Facet Block

A facet block is an injection used to alleviate pain due to facet arthritis. The facet joint is one of several very important joints in the back. A facet block has a dual purpose. It is therapeutic, because it will alleviate pain. It is anti-inflammatory medications is given. The anesthetic provides immediate pain relief. The anti-inflammatory, or steroid medication, has a slower onset, but longer lasting result.

If a facet block is successful in alleviating pain, then the facet joint has been identified as a source of back pain. With recurrence of pain, the patient may be considered for a procedure with a longer lasting effect, like facet rhizotomy or facet augmentation.
