Diseases And Conditions

A number of conditions can affect the brain. These conditions can be the result of infection, inflammation, problems with blood vessels (vascular) or relating to tumors (neoplastic). The presentation of these conditions depends on the part of the brain affected. These conditions can affect the brain globally or focally. Examples of a global affect on the brain include headache, loss of consciousness, altered mental status (characterized as acting inappropriate, having inappropriate actions or a lower level of alertness) and seizures. When the brain is focally affected there may be loss of a specific function. This can result in alterations in speech, loss of vision, loss of sensation or weakness of one part of the body or another.

The Los Angeles Brain and Spine Institute is considered a tertiary institute. This means that we are dedicated to sub-specialty care of specific brain conditions. What sets us apart is that we bring all of these sub-specialties together, in one institute, to provide the highest level of care possible to our patients.
