Neurocritical care is a very specialized form of critical care, involving the care of the neurologically critically injured or diseased patient. Neurocritical care interventions are procedures and therapeutic interventions performed by the Neurocritical care physician to preserve life and brain function. These include ventriculostomy, invasive monitoring, transcranial dopplers, neuroprotection and hypothermia.

Very few Neurocritical care facilities are available in the Los Angeles area. Patients are often transferred to a Los Angeles Brain and Spine Institute critical care unit specifically for a higher level of critical care not available at other facilities.
